At Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady University, formerly Our Lady of the Lake College our students are committed to using what they learn both inside and outside of the classroom to transform the world around them. That dedication to helping others has earned us a place on the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a university can receive for exemplary, innovative, and effective community service programs.
At Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady University, we strive continually to promote individual and collective social responsibility within the concepts of community, democracy and social justice. Civic Engagement includes such activities as developing informed perspectives on social issues, working with others to solve public problems, taking an active role in the political process, advocating for policies that address issues of concern to you, and, of course, engaging directly in activities that meet human and community needs.
Examples of our civic engagement/community outreach projects can include:
- Volunteer service at a non-profit agency
- Contribution of voluntary work on a political campaign
- Advocacy on specific issues such as tobacco products use/misuse in Louisiana
- Involvement with a faculty member on a community-based research project
- Employment in a community work-study position
It is true that “Volunteers are seldom paid; not because they are worthless, but because they are PRICELESS!”
COMMUNITY PARTNER SPOTLIGHT: BOYS HOPE/GIRLS HOPE
The statistics facing American cities are grim. Twenty percent of American children age six or younger live below the poverty line, and children born into poverty are six times likelier to drop out of school. Costs to the economy associated with high school dropouts reach $260 billion each year.
Many factors beyond a child’s control—poverty, crime, divorce—can combine to strangle his or her potential. Boys Hope/Girls Hope is a non-profit organization that helps academically capable and motivated children who are in need meet their full potential by providing value-centered, family-like homes, opportunities and education.
Early in September of 2009, Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady University’s Service-Learning office formed a partnership with Boys Hope/Girls Hope of Baton Rouge. The partnership has proven to be beneficial for all involved.
Franciscan University students have been participating in Service-Learning projects with Boys Hope/Girls Hope by mentoring, tutoring, providing meals for both the boys’ home and the girls’ home, and helping with the gardens at both homes. The presence of Franciscan University students provides positive role models of success for the Boys Hope/Girls Hope scholars. They felt empowered and capable to continue excelling in school so that they may one day continue on to college.
“Working with OLOL College has been a mutually rewarding experience. Both OLOL College students and our scholars have had fun, and have supported and learned from each other. We look forward to a continued partnership with Our Lady of the Lake College!” -- Jaclyn Ciello, Volunteer Director, Boys Hope/Girls Hope of Baton Rouge
